What do we do?
All of the advisors who work for Paveways Plus follow a program of induction and training based on that of the Citizens Advice Service. Chris - a visually impaired volunteer - tells us about his experiences:
"The CAB training material at first appeared hard to understand due to the layout and the fact that I use speech output software on the computer which allows a blind person to navigate. Taking into account the time that I spent on the first module I feel I was able to get a grasp of the layout quite quickly and soon started to enjoy it. Before I knew where I was I had reached the end of the course!
The way in which all volunteers work as a team at Paveways is very reassuring not only for experienced advisors, but for any new volunteer. The pace of the work carried out at Paveways is comfortable and suited to disabled volunteers as any issues are discussed with the supervisor and other team members.
I would like to think Paveways will continue to grow and be able to offer aditional services as there is clearly a need for disabled volunteers to be involved in the running of such a project. The disabled people and carers who call the helpline certanly feel more at ease knowing that the person they are talking to not only has personal experience of disability and of services they have found useful, but also a vast data base of information at their fingertips in which to find the answer to sometimes, very complex issues.
Helping other disabled people is very rewarding. I know how frustrating it can be trying to find a certain service or being passed from one person or organisation to another in the course of the day without result, leaving you feeling deflated and no nearer resolving your problem!"
