Volunteering opportunities are based in community locations across Wigan .
Key activities

Providing support to enable disabled people to take part in leisure or educational activities.
Accompanying disabled people to local venues, providing encouragement and motivation, offering support with transport and mobility.
The role of each enabling volunteer will be based on the needs and wishes of the person they are supporting, and will be discussed right at the start.

Time Commitment

Various. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one volunteering visit a fortnight.

Requirements for the role •  2 references required.
•  Criminal records disclosure
(Leonard Cheshire Disability will organise this)
•  Ability to attend training
Additionally, for roles requiring driving:

Volunteers must have a full clean driving licence and be able to prove their MOT and insurance is current. Drivers may have to amend their insurance policy before using their own car but this will not usually affect the insurance premium.

Previous experience of working with disabled adults not necessary

Training provided for the role
•  Volunteer Induction Training
•  Disability Equality Training
•  Moving and Handling as required by risk assessment

 

Any other comments Reasonable out of pocket expenses associated with carrying out this role will be reimbursed.

As transport is an issue for many disabled people, access to your own vehicle would be very beneficial, but is not essential.
